Pediatric Podiatry

Children's foot care should focus on pain, function, development, and changes that may need treatment or monitoring.

Pediatric Podiatry

When should a child see a podiatrist?

Many foot shapes and walking patterns change naturally as children grow. An evaluation is helpful when a child has pain, avoids activity, limps, repeatedly trips, wears shoes unevenly, or has a concern that is getting worse.

Common pediatric foot concerns

  • Heel pain during sports or growth
  • Flat feet with pain or fatigue
  • Intoeing, out-toeing, or gait concerns
  • Sports injuries and ankle sprains
  • Ingrown toenails and plantar warts
  • Toe walking or recurrent falls
  • Foot or toe deformities

What happens during the visit?

We review pregnancy and birth history when relevant, developmental milestones, pain pattern, activity level, injuries, shoes, and family history. The examination looks at gait, alignment, flexibility, strength, joint motion, skin, nails, and areas of tenderness.

Does every concern need treatment?

No. Some findings only need reassurance and monitoring. Treatment is considered when pain, stiffness, weakness, instability, skin problems, or functional limitation is present. Options may include shoe changes, stretching, physical therapy, activity adjustments, bracing, orthotics, medication, or a procedure for selected conditions.

When is prompt care needed?

Seek prompt evaluation after a significant injury, when a child cannot bear weight, or when there is deformity, marked swelling, fever, spreading redness, an open wound, or sudden weakness. Persistent night pain or unexplained swelling should also be assessed.

Helping children feel comfortable

We explain the examination in age appropriate language and involve the parent or caregiver in the plan. Bring current shoes, sports equipment if relevant, previous imaging, and a list of symptoms or activity limits.

Frequently asked questions

Will I need an X-ray or another test?

Testing depends on the examination and the suspected cause. Imaging is recommended when it can answer a specific question or change the treatment plan.

Can I continue my normal activity?

Activity guidance depends on pain, stability, strength, and the risk of making the problem worse. The clinician will explain what is safe to continue and what should be modified.

When should I schedule an appointment?

Schedule when symptoms persist, return repeatedly, limit walking or exercise, or cause concern about a new injury or change in the foot.
