EMG / NVC Studies

Experiencing numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness in your feet or legs? Signature Foot & Ankle offers convenient in-office EMG/NCV studies to get answers faster.

EMG / NVC Studies

What are EMG / NVC Studies?

Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) studies are diagnostic tests that evaluate how well your muscles and nerves are functioning. EMG measures the electrical activity in muscles, while NCV measures how quickly electrical signals travel through your nerves. Together, they help your doctor determine if symptoms like numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain are due to nerve damage, muscle problems, or a combination of both.

Why We Offer This Service?

EMG/NCV studies provide critical insight for a range of conditions that affect the feet, ankles, and lower extremities, including:

  • Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage related to diabetes or other causes)
  • Tarsal tunnel and other nerve entrapment syndromes
  • Nerve compression injuries
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in feet or legs
  • Muscle weakness of the lower limb
  • Pain that may relate to nerve-muscle dysfunction

These studies offer diagnostic clarity that cannot always be obtained from imaging alone, such as X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans.

Benefits of EMG/NCV at Signature Foot?

Fast, Convenient Access:
Unlike traditional referrals that send you off-site with long wait times, our patients can often be evaluated and tested right here in our clinic within a few days.

Comprehensive Care:
EMG/NCV testing provides a more holistic picture and helps your provider accurately diagnose and tailor effective treatment plans for nerve-related foot and ankle problems.

Helpful for Wound Care & Complex Cases:
For patients with chronic wounds or other conditions that may involve neuropathy or nerve dysfunction, EMG/NCV studies can inform treatment direction and help prevent further complications.

Coordinated Treatment Path:
Test results are integrated with your overall care plan, including physical therapy, custom orthotics, medication management, or surgical evaluation if needed.

What Can I Expect?

  • Testing takes approximately 30–60 minutes depending on the number of nerves/muscles evaluated.
  • EMG involves small electrodes (needle or surface) to assess muscle electrical activity.
  • NCV uses mild electrical stimulation to measure nerve signal speed and strength.
  • Many patients return to normal activity immediately after testing; discomfort is typically minimal.

Do I Need a Doctor’s Appointment First?

Yes. EMG/NCV studies must first be recommended by one of our providers during a clinical appointment. This allows our doctors to review your symptoms, determine whether the test is appropriate, and ensure you receive the most targeted evaluation and care. We will then schedule a follow-up appointment to complete the testing and work to get authorization from your insurance.

If you’re curious whether EMG/NCV testing could help, you can book a consultation today by scheduling an appointment online or calling us at (561) 203-9285.
