ActivArmor is a custom 3D printed cast or splint made from a scan of the injured area. Its open design is waterproof and allows the skin to be seen. It may be an option for selected stable injuries or postoperative needs after a clinician determines that this type of support is appropriate.
The foot or ankle is scanned to create a digital model. The device is manufactured to match the prescribed position and level of support. A temporary brace, boot, or cast may be needed while it is produced.
Suitability depends on the diagnosis, stability, swelling, skin condition, expected changes during healing, and the level of immobilization required. An open design may not be appropriate for an unstable fracture, rapidly changing swelling, an open wound, or any condition that needs a traditional cast.
A custom device still requires clinical follow up. Contact the office for increasing pain, numbness, rubbing, skin breakdown, looseness, swelling beyond the device, or a change in color or temperature. Do not change weight bearing without approval.
