Fat Pad Restoration

Fat pad restoration may be discussed for selected patients with painful loss of natural cushioning under the heel or forefoot.

Fat Pad Restoration

What is fat pad loss?

The natural fat pads beneath the heel and ball of the foot cushion bone and soft tissue during standing and walking. With age, repeated pressure, certain foot shapes, prior surgery, or other conditions, this cushioning can thin or shift.

What does it feel like?

  • A bruised or deep aching feeling under the heel or forefoot
  • Pain when walking barefoot or on hard floors
  • Visible thinning or prominent bones under the skin
  • Callus buildup over a pressure point
  • Reduced comfort even in cushioned shoes

How is the cause confirmed?

We examine the painful area, skin, calluses, foot alignment, sensation, circulation, and how pressure is distributed. Other causes such as a stress injury, neuroma, plantar fasciitis, arthritis, or a skin lesion need to be considered before treatment.

What are the first treatment options?

Footwear, cushioning, metatarsal pads, heel cups, activity changes, callus care, and custom orthotics may reduce pressure. These measures are often tried before an injectable fat pad restoration product is considered.

When may an injection be discussed?

An injectable cushioning product may be discussed for selected patients with localized fat pad atrophy and persistent pressure pain. Suitability depends on skin condition, circulation, sensation, infection risk, medical history, and the exact location of symptoms. Results and duration vary, and the treatment is not appropriate for every patient.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fat Pad Restoration right for every patient?

No. The diagnosis, health history, previous care, treatment goals, and possible risks all affect whether this option should be considered.

How many visits will I need?

The schedule depends on the treatment and how the condition responds. You will receive a plan for follow up rather than a guaranteed number of visits.

What if I do not improve?

The diagnosis and plan should be reassessed. Another treatment, additional testing, a period of protection, or a specialist discussion may be appropriate.
