What is diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound?

Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound uses sound waves to create real time images of soft tissue. It does not use radiation. For selected foot and ankle concerns, it can help a clinician look at tendons, ligaments, fluid, cysts, joints, and other structures while the foot moves.

Who may benefit

Ultrasound may be considered when the examination suggests a soft tissue problem, including:

• Tendon irritation or a possible tear
• A ganglion cyst or other soft tissue lump
• Joint fluid or inflammation
• A suspected neuroma
• Guidance for selected injections or procedures

What to expect

The clinician places gel on the skin and moves a small probe over the area. Images appear on a screen during the examination.

• You may be asked to point, flex, or move the foot
• The painful area may be compared with the other side
• Findings are reviewed in the context of your symptoms and examination

Important considerations

• Ultrasound cannot answer every diagnostic question
• X-rays are better for many bone and alignment concerns
• MRI or CT may still be recommended for deeper or more complex problems

The choice of imaging depends on the suspected condition. Ultrasound is useful only when it adds information that can change the care plan.
